Tips on Choosing the Best Toothbrush for You

Everyone needs a good toothbrush, but with so many varieties and styles to choose from, finding the best toothbrush for you may seem like a challenge. While brushing your teeth is only one element of proper daily oral hygiene, finding the right implement for you will help ensure you’re doing the most to keep your teeth clean every day.

Standard Toothbrushes

The standard toothbrush is nothing more than a handle with bristles. Bristle shapes vary by brand and style. Some types offer deep gumline cleaning while others include hard rubber tongue brushes built into their brush heads. Whatever type you choose, make sure it has the American Dental Association (ADA) approval. Look for the “ADA Approved” symbol on the packaging.

Do you struggle with sensitive gums? Have other oral health issues that require specialized care? Are typical toothbrushes uncomfortable or painful for you to use? If so, ask your dentist for suggestions. Some harder bristles may be effective at removing plaque but also damage the gums. It’s vital to find a good balance between comfort and cleaning power.  Ultimately your choice is an individual one though. You should aim to find what feels comfortable and is effective for you. Try to replace your disposable standard toothbrushes every two to three months or whenever the bristles start to fray.

Electric Brushes

Many Americans like electric toothbrushes because they feel like they make your mouth cleaner. However, most clinical trials have not shown any noticeable difference in performance between standard and electric toothbrushes.

If you opt for the electric version, remember that you will need to replace the head of the brush just like you would a standard brush. Most electric toothbrushes come in starter kits that come with one or two additional replacement heads. You will need to purchase more to replace your toothbrush head on a consistent basis. Like standard toothbrushes, you should replace electric toothbrush replacement heads every two to three months or once the bristles start fraying.

Waterpiks®

Many Americans are opting for Waterpiks® or “hydro-flossing” in place of string flossing with their oral hygiene routines. However, it is important to understand what a Waterpik® does before committing to the purchase. A Waterpik® is not a replacement for a toothbrush. It is an additional element of your oral hygiene routine that can help easily flush away food and plaque from between your teeth similar to flossing. In fact, recent research suggests that water flossing may be more effective than typical string flossing.
