Martin – Taylor Dentistry is a leading provider of preventive, restorative, cosmetic, emergency, and children’s dentistry services in Tucson, AZ. Established decades ago by Dr. Jeff Martin, it now operates as a partnership between Dr. Martin and his son-in-law Dr. Will Taylor, who are both highly skilled and experienced dentists.
The office uses some of the most advanced technologies available in the world of dentistry today. The amenities provided to the patients in the welcoming and comfortable office and the team of friendly and caring professionals ensure that patients receive the best possible experience.
But it wasn’t always a walk in the park. The strong and solid dental practice that you see today had much humble beginnings.
Humble beginnings
As a fresh graduate from Baylor University dental school, Dr. Martin first hung out his shingle in Tucson in 1978 when he leased space from another dentist. Because he was sharing space, he could only work during the hours of 3:30 pm till 9:30 pm. He continued those crazy hours for two years, working hard to build up his fledgling practice. And just like a new colt on spindly legs, things seemed a little shaky at first. Even when he moved to his current location two years later, most of his patients were his relatives! Back then he was pretty much a one man show. With 1000 square feet, 2 chairs, and no hygienist, Dr. Martin did all the cleanings and dental work himself. But word about this remarkably talented and personable dentist spread.
Making a name for himself
Dr. Martin spent as much time as he could introducing himself to the dental community of Tucson. The young dentist also discovered that his dental supply providers were a great resource in connecting him with dentists ready to retire. He made such an excellent impression on one older dentist, Dr. Martin was offered the opportunity to buy his practice in 1981. It wasn’t a huge practice, but it was a start. Eventually he was able to hire a hygienist a couple of days a week. According to Arizona state law, dentists couldn’t advertise back then. A dental practice was built solely by word of mouth referrals based on the skill of the dentist, not the flashiness of their ad campaign.
The practice grew… and grew… and grew…
Word of Dr. Martin continued to spread throughout Tucson. As new patients came to his office, Dr. Martin realized his little 1000 square foot office was bursting at the seams. So in 1999, he leased an additional 1000 square feet in the office complex and set out to totally update and refurbish the office. He knocked out a wall and rebuilt the whole office, adding four more chairs. As mentioned, it was during this time Dr. Martin had also invested in a 14-chair clinic in Tucson. The experience he gained interviewing, hiring and supervising numerous dentists for the clinic, provided him the unique ability to see a stellar dentist when one crossed his path.
And then there were two…
That young dentist happened to be his son-in-law, Dr. Will Taylor. Dr. Taylor joined the practice in 2008. Dr. Martin says that aside from the fact that Will Taylor married his daughter, Will was the brightest, most hard-working and talented young dentist he had ever seen. Both men have found their styles, skills and personalities to be a perfect blend which provides their patients with the very best care. They also really like each other which makes for a terrific work environment not only for themselves but also for their staff and patients. Over the years Drs. Martin and Taylor have continued to invest in the newest technology which allows them to offer more services than many other general dentists.
Continued Growth
As our practice continues to grow and more patients learn about the compassionate and personalized care our office provides, the need for a new doctor has arisen. This is why, in 2022, we were delighted to add Dr. Melvin Abraham to our team. Dr. Abraham comes to us as a recent graduate of the Midwestern University – Glendale, Arizona dental program, where he excelled and achieved his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree. While having the skills required to perform safe and effective dentistry is absolutely paramount, we also recognize Dr. Abraham’s passion for both the field of dentistry and his patients. We believe you are going to love visiting Dr. Abraham.
Dr. Abraham has been passionate about healthcare since he was young, growing up in Gilbert, Arizona. He has shadowed dentists, volunteered at various dental clinics, and has even been a dental assistant on his journey to becoming our newest doctor. Dr. Abraham also values the importance of educating patients so they can care for their oral health as a part of their everyday routine.
Aside from work, Dr. Abraham loves spending time with his family, including his twin nieces and nephew. He stays active by visiting the gym and playing various sports, with a current focus on golfing in the beautiful sunny weather Tucson offers. Dr. Abraham is an avid fan of the Phoenix Suns and Arizona basketball program. Other hobbies include playing the piano, guitar, and drums.
Down the road…
Many of the folks seen at Martin Taylor Dentistry are 2nd and 3rd generation patients of the practice! Some of the staff have been with Dr. Martin for 25 years. These facts point to a business with a firm foundation and a solid future. The dental practice of Martin Taylor has a rich and long history and it looks like they’ll continue to serve Tucson for many years to come!
