Digital Dental X-Rays

Dr. Taylor looks at a patient’s x-rays

Intraoral x-rays are an important part of providing dental care. While a dentist can view the outer portions of your teeth and gums during a visual exam, there are many essential parts of your tooth and bone structure that contribute to a healthy mouth that simply cannot be seen by the naked eye. At Martin Taylor Dentistry, Tucson, AZ area patients can benefit from the latest digital dental x-ray technology, which assists our dentists in diagnosing and treating you more effectively.

Benefits of digital mouth x-rays

There are two kinds of x-rays available in dentistry: traditional film x-rays, and the newer digital x-rays. Both are used to see what is happening in the inner structures of your teeth and jaw, but digital x-rays offer several advantages over traditional films, which is why Dr. Martin and Dr. Taylor have committed to using only digital x-ray technology in their practice:

  • The images are much larger and offer more detail than film
  • Digital images can be manipulated, which means that the dentists can zoom in and alter the contrast of the images for a clearer, more accurate picture of what is happening in your mouth
  • They are immediate, which means we can pull your tooth x-rays up on the screen right next to you while you are in the dental chair and use them as a powerful educational tool

What about radiation?

Many patients are concerned about being exposed to radiation through dental x-rays. The great news is that modern dental x-rays are safe—even the traditional film x-rays—and expose you to only very low doses of radiation. As an example, it would take thousands of dental film x-rays to equal the amount of radiation you are exposed to in a single MRI; and digital x-rays expose you to even less radiation! Digital x-rays use less radiation than you’d be exposed to during one day in the sun.
